So basically the ordnance is still in place. Maybe to a certain degree the ships were still "hot", but at a very low level. It is interesting that the US Government did not complete the job they had started. I had the good fortune to spend a month there and dived all the main 'warship' wrecks that are there and, while not necessarily in the class of 'Sara', also found the lesser visited ones very interesting. whatever they sank with is still there.Īnd as far as I am aware nothing has been done re removal in the interim since I was there. Most (all?) other ships were not even touched in the pre opening archaeological surveys, etc, i.e. Sara has many aerial torpedos and bombs clearly visible/accessible on her hanger deck.

However radioactivity tests conducted on the actual wrecks themselves (while I was there) showed no sign of radioactivity whatsoever. When I was there signs were still abundant stating not to eat anything grown on the island (Bikini) although some of the 'locals' didn't pay a great heed to that. Yes they did replant some palm tress (and other 'crops') on Bikini itself (and maybe elsewhere?), but as far as i am aware only so as to be able to gauge the amount of radioactive uptake over the years. No they did not scrape the islands 'clean' (not possible really) although some soil was removed prior to 'opening'. deep) diving techniques so, given you have had no other replies, I offer the following comments just prior to and after 'opening' as a dive destination, as a 'scuba' instructor training the dive operators of the resort in technical (i.e. While no authority on what happened at Bikini, I was there in the mid and later 90's, i.e. I was told the USN wanted to try and remove as much live ordnance as possible before the Bikinian's got the lagoon back. All of the ships in the lagoon had live ordnance onboard,i.e., Sara was the ship that had the most in the hanger deck, Did they remove the live ordnance yet? While there we were told the islands in the lagoon would be scrap clean and soil and palm tree's replanted, Have they?Ģ.

While there the ships dive team was advised that the wrecks in the lagoon still had live ordnance onboard and at all cost do not scrap the hull because they were still hot.ġ. While the in US Coast Guard mid-90's, While station on a 180 Balsum Class Bouy Tender the ship was directed to the lagoon to mark all the wrecks for divers.

Let me know if you have any specific questions and I will answer them as they come.Bikini Atoll World Naval Ships Forums Archive Sorry if this is really brief, I've been up for almost 48 hours after getting back. Tank bands for side mount tanks an a few bailouts?īolt snaps for 5 tanks (5 large bolt snaps / 5 medium) Packing list: (these are all the main parts, had a few other things as well)

I did 5 min safety stops after my deco obligations running a 45/75 GF. don't do things that can get you hurt - you're a long way from helpĭive really conservatively - you're a long way from help. 40CuFt tanks were always hanging on the deco bars.īring at leasts 2 computers, I had 4 in total counting my rebreather controller petrel.

Bailouts were 16/40 & 50/0 both 80CuFt tanks. I used a Diverite O2ptima CCR diving on 16/40 Diluent for most of the dives with the exception of 3 dives which were air Dils. If you plan on doing exploration diving and penetrating a lot come with a buddy you trust working with inside of a wreck as you may not find people on the boat that fit your style of diving. Not a lot of people dive these wrecks so it is very easy to silt it up. If you plan on visiting Bikini then I highly suggest using a CCR but the OC tec divers were able to dive it just fineīe comfortable with deco procedures and if you plan on exploring inside be comfortable with 0 vis situations and have practice in moving slowly inside of wrecks trying to avoid silting it up. Due to the remoteness of the island and lack of any medical care within 27 hours of Bikini this diving should be approached very conservatively. Pictures also linked at the bottom.īikini Is deep but not super deep if you're accustomed to technical diving, Yes technical diving is a requirement to dive Bikini. Mostly for those that want to know what 11 days of diving in Bikini Atoll will be like and what is actually needed. Incoming wall of text for the dive nerds like myself that are into dive profile.
